The NMD’s collection not only reflects the development and heritage of the dental profession, but also the profession’s heritage and impact on our daily lives and cultures.
From the earliest examples of personal oral hygiene to the mouths of the animal kingdom and from dental technology’s ties to blacksmiths and barber-surgeons to the equipment and instruments of the high-tech dental clinics of future, our 40,000+ object collection is one of the nation’s leading and most diverse dental collections in the world.
Archives
The NMD collects, preserves, and celebrates the documents, images, and ephemera that chronicles the evolving impact dental professionals have made and continue to make on the world. The archives chronicle the founding and advancements of dental education, technology, and professionalism, the personal and business records of innovators and agents of change within the dental community, and the overall progress of the dental profession from the 18th century through today.
Our archival holdings include textual documentation, correspondences, photographs, audiovisual materials, trade literature, patents, and more. This material provides invaluable insight into the foundation, professionalization, and continued progress of a profession, and the broad range of individuals, groups, organizations, and businesses that continue to make an impact on the dental world.
Library
The NMD’s library collection, available on-site only, encompasses historically significant texts on the subjects of dentistry, dental history, and oral health; publications examining the professional trends at the local, state, national, and international level, as well as various other directories, journals, periodicals, and yearbooks.
